My heart is a chainsaw movie5/13/2023 Stephen Graham Jones is one of the premier, and most prolific, horror writers working today. As we are pulled into her dark dreams, we begin to see a scared little girl hiding behind the mask, a girl who is angry, but also a girl who loves others fiercely, and desperately wants a place to call home. Using her encyclopedic mind of horror movie icons, Jade predicts how this evil plot will unfold. But blood actually begins to spill around the waters of Indian Lake. In Jade’s world, she uses horror movies to protect herself, and specifically enjoys the horror movies in which a masked killer is hellbent on revenge against a world that wronged them.Īs Jade tells us the history of her town, Proofrock, she tells the story as though it is one of those movies. Half-Indian, living with an abusive father and her mother long gone, it seems her entire family wants nothing to do with her. “A love-letter to horror and the slasher genre, Jones’ latest novel unmasks the trope in ways we’ve never really seen before.”

Plow over5/13/2023 Tokarczuk is a prophet for our times who understands us in all our hilarity, messiness, cruelty and animalism, and it is a great privilege to bring to the stage what is surely one of literature’s most urgent accounts of being alive today. Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead is a provocative exploration of the murky borderland between sanity and madness, justice and tradition, autonomy and. “Olga Tokarczuk has created an extraordinary world that speaks to my deepest sense of the continuity between humankind and nature – a world where, like a mycelium web, all entities are connected deeply at the roots, unable to exist alone. What does it mean to be human and what does it mean to be animal, and can we separate the two? Why is the killing of animals sport and that of humans murder? A rallying cry for nature, it explosively exposes the hypocrisy of institutional power. Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead 2009/18 1/2 This book by Olga Tokarczuk (the winner of the International Booker Prize Award for Flights) was translated from the Polish in 2018 by Antonia Lloyd-Jones. Olga Tokarczuk’s “marvelously weird and fablelike mystery” ( The New York Times) is a whodunnit unlike any other. She has been watching the animals with whom the community shares their isolated, rural home, and she believes they are acting strangely… Janina Duszejko – ex-engineer, environmentalist, devoted astrologer and enthusiastic translator of William Blake – has her suspicions. In a small community on a remote mountainside near the Czech-Polish border, men from the local hunting club are dying in mysterious circumstances.

Josie silver novels5/12/2023 I took my time because I just bought it and don’t want to finish it immediately. How many days it took me to finish this book?Ī week. But there’s still romantic love here.Īs a reader, it felt to me that the book focused more on how Lydia Bird grieves, moves on, and how keeping two lives is not good for her or for anyone. This novel is more about grief, family, and moving on and less about romantic love. In her sleeping life, or rather when Lydia takes this special sleeping pills, Freddie is alive. In Lydia’s waking life, Freddie, her fiance, is already dead by a car accident. Naturally, this is about Lydia Bird having two lives □ What Is This Novel by Josie Silver About? I love it when a book cover is colored pink! How about you? But then I saw the good reviews on Instagram and Amazon and I said, “what the hell? Might as well try and read it for myself, there’s nothing else to do during lockdown. So when I saw Josie Silver has a new book, I wasn’t excited about it. I tried three times to at least finish one chapter but I can’t. One Day In December is one of the books I can’t continue reading after a few pages. I was kinda hesitant to read The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver.

It Was Just, Yesterday by Mirja Unge5/12/2023 Told, in most cases, through the eyes of teenage girls or young women, these stories exhibit a unique prose style that perfectly captures the conversational rhythms, and preoccupations, of their generation. Abuse, betrayal and neglect lurk beneath a veneer of mutually maintained normality, waiting for an opportunity to resurface. The characters in Mirja Unge's debut collection are all, in their own way, evading something whether failing to confront the true nature of an encounter, or avoiding responsibilities as a parent, sibling or friend. In a checkout queue, a woman suddenly shows charity to a penniless guy she apparently doesn't know. In a remote woodland cottage, an eccentric explains to his granddaughter why he shoots cats whenever they make themselves too comfortable. On Christmas Eve, a girl stalks an older man through wintery city streets, haunted by their shared past.

The Case for Easter Bible Study Guide: Investigating the Evidence for the Resurrection by Lee Strobel It was an encouraging read, and a good one for anyone looking into the Easter story. This shows that the Gospels were written from the point of view of individuals who witnessed different aspects of Jesus' life, and remembered different occurrences from the same events. She argues that if they had given identical accounts, it would suggest that they were more likely to have agreed on what to say together. I liked her explanations as to why the Gospels differ from each other, comparing the writers to witnesses about to give evidence in court. It's not the first book that I've read that has taken historical evidence, and evidence from the eyewitness accounts in the Bible, to give evidence that Jesus' resurrection was no fake, but it came up with some ideas I'd never thought of.Īt one point, Rebecca McLaughlin mentions the Romans as "key witnesses" to what happened, which seems surprising, but points to the evidence that the Romans proved the Jesus died on the cross, disspelling any possible claims that He may have simply fainted. I got given this one as a freebie, and enjoyed this. Is Easter Unbelievable?: Four Questions Everyone Should Ask About the Resurrection Story by Rebecca McLaughlin Both these books have a similar subject matter, so I'll review them together.
